A horse suddenly came galloping quickly down the road. It seemed as though the man had somewhere important to go. Another man, who was standing alongside the road, shouted, “Where are you going?” and the man on the horse replied, “I don’t know! Ask the horse!”
A poem, featured in Thich Nhat Hanh’s book about transforming suffering.
Reflection
Our habits, whether they are physical actions we carry out in the world, or simply thoughts that appear over and over in our minds… shape how we feel and carry out every minute of our lives. Do we ever take the time to stop and notice them, and consider how beneficial they are? Or do we simply let them carry us along each day, like the horse carries this man? Just as good sleep, good diet, and good exercise can make enormously positive difference in the quality of our lives, so does good mindfulness… health for the mind. If you’ve never considered that you can actually tame the horse that is your mind, now is your chance 🙂
